The NBA, or National Basketball Association, is a professional basketball league in North America composed of 30 teams. It is widely regarded as one of the premier basketball leagues in the world, featuring some of the best players and highest levels of competition. The NBA was founded in New York City in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) before merging with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 and adopting its current name. The league’s regular season runs from October to April, culminating in the playoffs, which take place in May and June, ultimately leading to the NBA Finals, where the league champion is determined. The NBA is known for its influence on the sport, as well as for its cultural impact through global outreach, iconic players, and entertainment events, such as the NBA All-Star Game.
